Mae Hong Son, the second northernmost region of Thailand, is located in the north-western corner on the boundaries of Myanmar, 924 km north from Bangkok, and 300 km of Chiang Mai. In north and west, the land links to Myanmar’s border at Shan State. The east links to Chiang Mai and the south boundaries with Tak. 12,681 sq km of the whole Mae Hong Son vicinity is the environmentally sheltered with over 90% of the complete region consisting of mountains and forests. Notwithstanding much logging in the history, the region’s forest coverage still relics at over 69.19%. For the reason that its high height of 1,800 M. above sea level, its cold climate can fall to 2°C in winter – November to February and on the odd occasion rises above 40°C in summer – March to August. The normal temperature remains between 12.25°C and 27.68°C. Furthermore, the climate is over and over again so misty with ground fog that it is in the vicinity renamed as “Region of Three Mists”.

Because of the forest declination and the extermination of various species, the whole of the mountainous areas and natural wealth in Mae Hong Son have been affirmed as national protectorates. Instances include Mae Yuam River and Huai Nam Dang National Park, Salawin Forest and Valley, Mae Surin Forest and Waterfall. The most excellent time to visit Mae Hong Son is for the cool misty periods between November and December, when “Buatong” – the famous yellow flower of Mae Hong Son blooms and presents its visitors with the spectacle of an astonishing colored carpet layering the hillsides for miles after miles. Merely 11 km away is the deep virgin jungle of Mae Surin National Park in which stands the impressive Nam Tok Mae Surin, one of Thailand’s highest pours. For visitors who are obsessed with adventures such as trekking and rafting, Pai district is unquestionably the right target making your experience of Mae Hong Son reminiscence never to be forgotten and memorable for the whole life.

The Wild-Sunflower Field Thung Bua Thong, positioned near the Mae U-Kho Waterfall, covers over 1,000 rai of land. This meadow is by far the most frequently visited place at Doi Mae U-Kho, more than ever during November and December when wild-sunflowers bloom, covering the surrounding fields for as far as the eye can glimpse. It is assumed that Christian missionaries, who came to the area about 70 years before, were the earliest to plant these glorious flowers, as they are in reality native to Central and South America, where they are called as the ‘Mexican Sunflower’. The city of Pai is a small settlement situated between Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai, and boasts some of the most immaculate nature in the province. Tourists are suggested to turn up at least a day prior to trekking so they can converse to people who have just came back from the treks for the purpose of gaining precious information.

In view of the fact that there is no direct flight from Bangkok to Mae Hong son visitors may take the Bangkok-Chiang Mai flights that join with the Chiang Mai-Mae Hong Son flights. However bookings should be made before hand with Thai Airways Bangkok. By aeroplane, the journey from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son takes only thirty minutes. From Chiang Mai Airport, there are five every day flights obtainable at 9.30am, 11.35am, 11.55am, 1.50pm and 4.05pm. An economy class travel document costs 375 baht. Visitors are suggested to book tickets at least two days prior to departure.
From Chiang Mai, there are three diverse routes to Mae Hong Son. By the southern route via Hod and Mae Sariang, From Muang Chiang Mai, go for highway no.108 crossing Hang Dong, San Pa Tong, Chom Thong and Hod. Cleanly enter Mae Hong Son region at Mae Sariang district. Then you cross Mae La Noi, Khun Yuam, and now you are in Muang Mae Hong Son. It demands around seven to nine hours driving and the whole distance is 349 km.

Please note: This road to Mae Hong Son passes through numerous high and dodgy slope mountains with 1,864 curves. Visitors are suggested to travel with vigilance and only in daytime. Additionally as being safer, one can also get pleasure from beautiful scenery on both sides of path.
By the northern route via Mae Taeng and Pai, by preferring highway no.107 to the north, you will cross Mae Rim and Mae Taeng. At Mae Malai crossroads, take left to highway no.1095, crossing Pong Duad, Mae Taeng and the doorway of Huai Nam Dang at Pai. From Kiew Lom a scenic vantage point at Pang Ma Pha, go straight until getting to Muang Mae Hong Son. It demands seven to eight hours to drive and the distance is 245 km. Kindly note: The path conditions usually involve quite high slopes while thelanes are not as broad and easy to drive as highway no.108. Visitors should be very cautious not to drive over the speed perimeter.
By Mae Chaem – Khun Yuam route, from Mae Chaem, prefers highway no.1263 crossing Ban Na Chon, Pang Um, Doi Mai U-Kho and Khun Yuam. It demands about 2.5 – 3 hours. Subsequently, prefer highway no.108 ahead to Mae Hong Son. The building of Mae Chaem – Khun Yuam route was just ended in late 1999. There is not much lodgings or support available yet only two gas stations along the way and no bus service. For this reason, travelling at night is not recommended. Conversely, the route is one of the most gorgeous in the north.

Enjoy the expediency and simplicity of Internet check-in for THAI operated flights. Check-in can be made from two to twenty four hours prior to programmed flight departure at all stations. THAI holds the right to refute boarding if passenger’s travel papers are not comprehensive. To travel within the region, there are more often than not Songthaews obtainable to various destinations.

I and my family recently enjoyed our 3-night stay at one of the best resorts in Mae Hong Son. Our deluxe cottage was comfortable, sparkling, & roomy. It contained a large king-size bed & bathroom with shower with a delightful seating area in front of a large window. The bathroom was quite exclusive, as it had an open shower and an open screened-in area that presented a neat sight and peaceful jingles at night. I was really grateful for having a mini-bar in the room as well. The grounds of the resort were scrupulously groomed with a profusion of flowers. My only complaint about the resort was the 2 rollaway beds kept underneath it and in simple view. That seemed a bit “tawdry” in an otherwise immaculate setting. There is free of charge internet available in the lobby. The breakfast buffet was sufficient with cooked-to-order eggs obtainable upon request.

We had dinner both nights at their restaurant, which provided a delightful open-air, spacious dining experience. The resort was not packed, so we were kept in first-class style. Not all the employees spoke English, and the young woman at the welcome desk seemed to resist with hers as well. We moreover took advantage of their out door pool after a complete day of activities. On the whole, I think the resort where we had stayed is of great value. I would recommend two activities while in Mae Hong Son: get up in the early hours one morning to go into the city to see the local monks come for alms and rent a four wheel ATV in city for a fun-filled, guided ride in the town that includes a trip to a waterfall, if desired, one can book this at the resort.
Let these amazing hotels be the place for you to relax and restore your spirit! There are some resorts with charming bungalows on the banks of the river in a pleasing valley. They offer a break away from the pressures of the commerce world in a soothing garden setting. Taking in to consideration the nightlife, Mae Hong Son has very little apart from the odd karaoke joint and few open air restaurants providing alcohol and playing live music.

A few resorts stand in a teak-wood jungle on the edge of city. Resorts like Imperial Tara Mae Hong Son Resort are encircled by tropical gardens, mountains and streams and the resort’s low-rise plan means that nothing reaches on top of the tree line helping to uphold the areas natural beauty. The resort also provides well-appointed rooms. Some resorts are a perfect choice for visitors travelling on a restricted budget yet seeking a comfy place to stay when coming to Mae Hong Son. Resorts like the Rooks Holiday Resort; Mae Hong Son is positioned in the midst of a mesmerizing valley in Northern Thailand. Due to the Mae Hong Son’s natural beauty many tourists are attracted to come to Mae Hong Son contributing to tremendous growth of its resort industry.

The past of Thailand as a country dates back approximately 800 years, from the groundwork of the Sukhothai kingdom in the 13th century – 1238 AD. It was then that the Thais were primary united as a country that marked the Thai as separate people. But in reality, the history of the land at present defined by the boundaries of Thailand stretches back much auxiliary to the pre-historic era. Many discoveries uncovered and excavated in few parts of Thailand give sturdy evidence that highly civilized people once populated the province.

The conventional Isaan homes were made of raised wooden post building, so that animals, creeping insects could not penetrate the houses. The open area underneath the houses also served as a cool day workplace. There are actually many houses like this nowadays, dotted around the town. Many houses in towns are constructed in two phases. The bottom division is the shop to work or trade things and the first floor comprises of the bedrooms. Thai houses will not have a kitchen or furniture like we do. People will be seated and have food on the floor. There are many other diverse fashions of houses too, together with: the inside of these houses are very much similar to houses in England. There is much furniture, dining room, bedrooms, shower room, a kitchen, sitting room, and flushing toilets. Because of the jungle declination and the annihilation of various species, the whole of the mountainous regions and natural wealth in Mae Hong Son have been confirmed as national protectorates.

After the evaporation of the Ban Chiang civilization, the area was predisposed by an assortment of cultures from India in the 3rd century, the Mons sandwiched between the 6th and 10th centuries, and the Khmers who constructed the wondrous Angkor Wat and left their inheritance in the form of plentiful stone sanctuaries scattered across the Thai kingdom. However it was not until the Sukhothai kingdom was recognized that the Thai people were combined. Thailand currently has a populace of about 61.5 million according to 1998 estimate.

There is also no shower or bath as we know it, instead there is a big ‘tub’ for the water and a jug. Thai people bathe by throwing water over themselves. Most toilets are squat toilets although the western style toilets are becoming more available. Near the squat toilets there is a container filled with water and a cup or a hose pipe. These replace the flush of water. In most of houses, including slum housing, a TV, fridge and radio can be found.

(The City of Three Mists) Mae Hong Son is located in a deep valley covered in by high mountain ranges. Mae Hong Son has long been isolated from the outside environment. It is the most mountainous province in Thailand and compressed of almost 13, 814 square kilometers. It is basically covered with mist throughout the year. The name reflects to the truth that this terrain is highly useful and helpful for the training session of elephants. A previous governor of Chiang Mai always organized the rounding up of wild elephants which were then trained prior to being sent to the capital city for work. At present, Mae Hong Son is one of the “dream destinations” for visitors. It is the first destination choice of every tourist. Daily flights into its small airport bring increasing numbers of tourists, attracted by the natural beauty, amazing scenery, various hill-tribe communities and finest adventure chances.

The Thai citizens are famous for their tolerance and patience, warm welcome and joyfulness. They will pay no attention to the small mistake of social customs that you are assured to make. For the average tourist it’s extremely difficult to go incorrect. Just smile a lot, stay away from argument, and don’t insult the religion or monarchy of the country. Negative comments about the monarchy may be considered lese majeste, a crime which carries strict punishment in Thailand. When the national anthem is played, at 8.00 am and 6.00 pm daily and at public programs or in movies, for example, you are supposed to stand. The most excellent guide is to test out what other public are doing and follow suit.
The Thais put great value on personal cleanliness and appearance. Tank tops, singlet, shorts and the similar to are considered improper dress in all places apart from at the beach. Moving topless or naked at the seaside (or anywhere else) is considered as disrespect to the local public. It’s also against the law.

When going to someone’s residence or at certain offices and shops, it’s gracious to take away your shoes at the door. If you see shoes arranged on the floor at the door, don’t kill time to be asked- remove your shoes before entering.
The necessary information you must take to make your journey a comfortable and pleasant one, is from visas and embassies including the useful tips. When it is heavy rain or floods in Bangkok, don’t bother to put on a heavy raincoat. Put on something light and cool, a pair of plastic shoes and do not forget to get your umbrella, just like the Thais. The temperature in Bangkok occasionally gets up to 40 degrees with high humidity. Get along plenty of bottled when you’re going to places of interest. Dark glasses and sunscreen are required at all times. Sightseeing in the high temperature all day can be tiring, physically and mentally. Refresh yourself with a long-established Thai massage at one of the several shops around town or at your hotel.

Due to the negligence of public transportation in the district, the advisable mode of travels with local is motorbike. Mae Hong Son’s roads are actually not in a good condition. Even bicycles are very famous with both locals and tourists and are the affordable mode of transportation in the own districts. Four- wheeled vehicle is also the very much accessible form of transportation for travel into the mountains where the roads are known to be very dangerous. To visit rural locations or
hill-tribes, the one and only way to go is may be on foot.
Mae Hong Son, bordering Burma, is one of the rural provinces in Thailand. Tourists are diverted to this area due to its pristine virgin forests, fabulous mountains, amazing valleys, wonderful wildlife and unique hill-tribes. Pai district is currently known as Thailand ‘happiest’ hang-outs, second only to Koh Pha-ngan. The Thais put great value on personal cleanliness and appearance. Moving topless or naked at the seaside (or anywhere else) is considered as disrespect to the local public. It’s also against the law.

You must take necessary information and tips from visas and embassies to make your trip a comfortable and pleasant one. Get along plenty of bottled water when you’re going to places of interest. Dark glasses and sunscreen are required at all times. Sightseeing in the high temperature all day can be tiring, physically and mentally. Refresh yourself with a long-established Thai massage at one of the several shops around town or at your hotel.

The guest house where I and my family stayed during our last visit to Mae Hong Son is on the rim of the lake and subsequent to the temples. It is beautiful in the morning. You can see the lake, temples with mountain in the background. It is much shut to downtown, merely a few minutes walk. We went to the morning market for breakfast both of the days that we had stayed. Mae Hong Son has no communal transportation, so it is good to stay close to downtown. The rooms where we had stayed had 2 beds and a restroom with shower. It is a little complicated to make a hot shower work. The room contained a glass window, but it is screen close, not meant to be open. We had to put on the air conditioner in the room for air circulation. The possessor said it is hot most of the time, so populace always require air conditioner anyway. The room was sparkling and kind of appealing. They had a fine size of garden in the middle of the guest house. The garden was extremely nice. We had a small picnic in the garden while dinner. They were very responsive like most people we came across in Mae Hon Son. They lent their dishes for our picnic and gave us some recommendation for sight seeing.
